Why Positive Thinking Isn’t Enough

If there's one thing I've noticed over the years, both in my own life and through working with hundreds of people, it's this...

Most people don't actually need more motivation.

They need more understanding.

So often we tell ourselves, "I just need to think positively." We repeat affirmations, listen to motivational videos and try to convince ourselves that tomorrow will somehow be different.

But if it were really that simple, we'd all be living the lives we dream about.

The Problem With “Just Be Positive”

It's not that positive thinking doesn't work. It's just that it's not enough on its own.

The rule I follow in life is simple: be more positive than negative.

Think of it like a percentage. If we're at least 51-52% more positive than negative, our dial tips towards positive — and that's what brings more positive experiences into our lives, similar to how the law of attraction works.

So it's not about being positive all the time. It's about being more positive, most of the time.

It's also about noticing where you can turn a thought or a situation into something more positive. That helps too. But on its own, it's not powerful enough. It's only one piece of the picture.

The truth is, our mindset isn't something we can switch on overnight. It's shaped by years of experiences, beliefs, disappointments, successes, childhood messages and the stories we've repeated to ourselves for so long that we've started believing they're facts.

One of the biggest patterns I've noticed when coaching people is that they usually already know what they should be doing.

They know they need to exercise.

They know they need to have difficult conversations.

They know they should apply for the job, leave the relationship, start the business or believe in themselves a little more.

Knowledge is rarely the problem.

Belief is.

Somewhere along the way, many of us have picked up limiting beliefs that quietly run in the background. They whisper things like:

"I'm not good enough."

"People like me don't succeed."

"I'll probably fail anyway."

"What if people judge me?"

Those thoughts become the invisible handbrake on our lives.

💡 Friendly reminder: I’m not “negative” just because I notice difficult feelings – and neither are you. We’re human.

Start With Self-awareness, Not Slogans

That's why I don't believe mindset is about pretending everything is wonderful. It's about becoming aware of the thoughts that are driving your decisions and asking yourself whether they're actually true.

Awareness always comes before change.

Once you recognise the story that's been holding you back, you finally have the opportunity to rewrite it.

That doesn't mean life suddenly becomes easy.

It doesn't mean fear disappears.

It simply means fear no longer gets to make every decision for you.

I've had moments in my own life where I've questioned myself. Times when I've wondered whether I was capable enough, experienced enough or ready enough to take the next step.

Looking back, I'm so grateful I didn't wait until I felt confident.

Because confidence didn't come first.

Action did.

Every small step I took helped build the confidence I was waiting for.

That's something I remind clients of all the time. We often think confidence is the starting point, when actually it's usually the result of taking action despite the uncertainty.

So if you're feeling stuck today, perhaps don't ask yourself,

"How do I become more confident?"

Instead ask,

"What's one small action I could take today that my future self will thank me for?"

It doesn't have to be a giant leap.

Sometimes it's making a phone call.

Sometimes it's saying no.

Sometimes it's asking for help.

Sometimes it's simply believing that the life you want is possible.

Personal growth isn't about becoming someone else.

It's about becoming more of who you've always been underneath the fear, the doubt and the expectations you've carried for years.

And that journey begins with one decision.

Not to be perfect.

Just to begin.

Hands journalling to increase self-awareness

Gentle self-reflection often reveals patterns that Positive Thinking alone can’t touch for me.

A Thought to Leave You With...

Before you move on with your day, pause for just a moment.

Ask yourself:

"What's one small shift I could make today that my future self will thank me for?"

Remember, personal growth isn't about changing who you are. It's about gently peeling back the layers of fear, self-doubt and limiting beliefs so you can reconnect with the person you've always been.

One small step is still progress.

Be kind to yourself.
